An open letter to Mr Boots

Dear Mr Boots,

I write to you regarding your maternity pads.

You know the ones – “Boots Maternity Pads“, there are 10 of these beauties in each pack and they always seem to be on the heavenly 3 for 2 deal in your stores and online.

Well, anyway, I’m writing to you about these because quite frankly they are a load of crap. I’m being nice here Mr Boots, you’ve caught me in a good mood.

I’m just wondering if you have yourself ever given birth? No, I’m guessing not unless something dramatic has changed in our biological make up and I missed it – perhaps then, you know of people who have given birth? Have they shared the aftermath of birth with you, purely for your own research purposes I mean?

Surely, Mr Boots, you want to be selling us mums products that make us want to hug you, not curse your maternity range?

In case you haven’t had the experience of birth first hand, let me fill you in.

It’s not pretty Mr Boots, babies are pretty, but giving birth to them and what falls out of us afterwards, that is not pretty. We bleed, big blood clots at first, which means we soak through your 10 pack of maternity pads in about 2 hours! Then there is a bit of a lull, until we try and move and it all comes flooding out again. Don’t think I am exaggerating for dramatic effect here Mr Boots – a red flood is how it goes.

You are frightened to sit up, stand up, roll over, squat, laugh or cry, for fear that any alteration in your physical or emotional state will cause a red explosion.

Quite frankly Mr Boots, what I am trying to tell you is that your pads don’t cut it. They don’t even do half the job required.

After my last baby I had three of your lovely pads in at once and still leaked the red nasty everywhere.

Please Mr Boots, restore my faith in your products and fix this colossal problem for us mums. Just think you could be the hero here, I won’t ever forgive you, but there is still time to fix this for the rest of the mums-to-be out there.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Charlotte - Mummy Fever

P.S The kiss is a friendly gesture to show there are no hard feelings!

P.P.S Providing that you fix this A.S.A.P of course!

  1. As someone who has never given birth, I wouldn’t attempt to make great products that require knowledge of the situation – perhaps Mr Boots should employ some mothers to help product development 🙂 #effitfriday

  2. I have used Boots Breast pads 9 years before after I delivered DD1 and found them sticking to my milky nipples whenever I was ready to feed the little one. Didn’t think of writing about them but just moved on to Wilko brand that did the job better. For DD2, Wilko was still doing it’s job for me for both breast and maternity pads. Hope Boots fixes it soon though I am not sure if I will ever need it again 🙂

  3. Ooh I agree with the comment above about using reusable (cloth) ones. Earth conscious do a nice range of reusable pads, including some suitable for maternity. I didn’t know about them when I had mine but used reusable breast pads which were soooo much better than the disposable crap that boots turn out.x

  4. eughhhh….maternity pads, in short what a load of sh*t! I found that always night time work quite well, and handily don’t feel like a brick in your pants! I’m not saying they don’t leak at all but they hold more than the bricks…and last a little longer over night (ie: you only have to change once or twice not every hour!) #effitfriday

  5. I had some rubbish ones after my son was born, but I think they were from Mothercare. I can’t quite remember what the problrm was now, but I think it was that the sticky tabs wouldn’t come off… Or they wouldn’t stick properly, something like that. Generally they were crapper than period ones, presumably because the period ones are more likely to have repeat customers. Bit rubbish really. #bigfatlinky

  6. Well there we go. I have learned things about you that I never knew or considered. Whatever you do, don’t use TENA Men if you have any more kids (yes, you can buy such a thing). I don’t believe they’re designed for post birth *ahem* clear up. #BrilliantBlogPosts

  7. Funny, I remember opening a pack and thinking they were like real old fashioned pads my mum used to use. I just used the night time version of Always and they did the job.

  8. I had some boots ones this time and they were pretty crap, I think they are all crap though and glad I wont ever have to use them again. I’m shuddering at the thought. Thanks for linking to #PickNMix
