Celebrating Roald Dahl at Tatton Park

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl. His books always had a place on my book shelf as a child and they certainly have pride of place on my children’s bookcases as well as the story CDs being a regular part of bedtime too.

To celebrate this incredible author, Tatton Park are hosting a number of events this year, full details can be found here.

We spent some time at Tatton Park recently exploring the exhibition, in particular Fantastic Mr Fox at the Farm and Danny the Champion of the World in the Gardens. There is so much to see and do at Tatton Park, I never feel that a day is long enough to cover everything, so I’m so glad that we don’t live too far away.

We headed to the farm first to see the animals and play in the woodland trail. Tatton Park is huge so the little legs in the family did well to walk so far during the day. The animals are lovely and clearly so well cared for by the staff at the farm. It really is a lovely place to visit.

Fantastic Mr Fox ever made a personal appearance and was wandering around the farm meeting and greeting families.

There are plenty of opportunities to touch the animals and of course loads of hand washing facilities for afterwards as well. Toilet facilities are on site and a nice little shop which was quickly selling out of ice creams and drinks as the weather was so fantastic.

If little legs are too tired you can always catch the train which stops at the farm.

There is an indoor playbarn but as the weather was so fantastic the children opted to spend the bulk of the time in the woods, playing on the woodland trail and den building. Here they are working as a team to hide from Fantastic Mr Fox.

It’s hard to convey the sheer size of Tatton Park and how much there is to do, so hopefully this video will help.

After having so much fun at the farm we wondered if the little people (and the big people for that matter) had any energy left for anything else, but decided to head over towards the gardens and give it a go. We saw these stunning tulips on the way!

Before we could head off into the gardens we had to try out the stunning Victorian Carousel, which was a hit with young and old(er). The gardens were spectacular. I had never been into the formal gardens before so it was lovely to explore. There was actually a wedding on at the time and the gardens must have made a stunning backdrop for their photographs.

There was so much to explore in the gardens and the Danny the Champion of the World trail was wonderful, very authentic and lots of fun too. The children loved exploring and were thrilled to find yet another adventure trail to run and jump and climb on, using up the last bit of energy they had.

Take a look at the video below and see what we got up to in the gardens.

Are you a Roald Dahl fan? What’s your favourite book? Have you been to Tatton Park? It’s a 5* family day out without a doubt!

  4. It looks like a wonderful visit. I’d spotted it and would love to check it out but it’s too far, and we’re off to Geronimo there for our visit to Manchester and probably won’t get back up there before it finishes

  5. Ooh this looks amazing! I too hold my childhood Roald Dahl books dear as I absolutely loved them! My favourite is BFG I think. I have just started ‘reading’ Georges Marvellous Medicine to Mia who has just turned 3 and obviously I read the story from memory as she wouldn’t understand it if I read the actual book but I cant wait until shes old enough for me to read them all properly to her! 🙂
