Feeling under the weather? How to get back on your feet quickly

When you’re a parent, there’s nothing more frustrating than getting sick. Firstly because the chances are that you will still have to try and go about daily life as best you can, such as doing school runs and making dinner. Secondly, because it means that you may end up passing it onto your little ones, resulting in the whole family getting sick. What could be worse than a house full of sick people? If you’ve ever had a D and V bug whip through the household, you will know what I mean.

You may not be able to stop yourself from getting sick or from passing it onto your little ones, but what you can do is ensure that you get back on your feet more quickly. That way, should the rest of the family get what you’ve got, you’ll be feeling well enough to take care of them.

So, what does it take to get back on your feet more quickly when feeling under the weather?

Have a stock of things in your medical cabinet

I always like to have a stocked medical cabinet, even though I’m glad to say most things go out of date before we use them. It’s good to have a few good quality products to help you out when you are feeling under the weather. Combogesic combines ibuprofen and paracetamol into one handy tablet and is clinically proven to work 30% faster than either ingredient on their own. This makes it great for people who have lots on their plate and don’t have time to get bogged down by complicated dosing structures and just want quick and effective pain relief when they need it the most. Perfect when you are juggling lots of things and need something to do exactly what it claims to.

Also, since it’s just ibuprofen and paracetamol, there are none of the risks associated with taking strong codeine-based pain killers- perfect therefore for those “adult headaches” and any Lego-inflicted injuries! With a pack of these, some Lemsips and maybe a bottle of Night Nurse in you cabinet, at least you’ll be prepared.

Lots of rest

This actually makes me laugh out loud as this never happens. The idea of being able to get lots of rest when you have a hundred and one things to do might seem ludicrous, but if you want to get back on your feet more quickly, you need to give your body the time it needs to heal. See if there is anyway to catch a few minutes rest where you can and if that’s not possible, pop a movie on and watch with the children. At least you’ll be sat down!

Get swift medical treatment

Admittedly, not all illnesses can be helped by medical treatments, some things like colds and stomach bugs just have to run their course. However, if you suspect that what you’re suffering from is more likely an infection rather than a virus, it could be worth getting some medical attention. The sooner you are able to see a doctor, the better, as the sooner you get the medicine that you need, the quicker you will recover. If you’re not able to get an appointment at your regular doctor’s surgery due to high demand, consider contacting a private medical practice, such as the one run at Highgate Private Hospital. Yes, it will come with a cost, but at least you’ll get seen quickly and can get the medicine that you need, speeding up the healing process.

Keep hydrated

A lot of the time when you’re unwell, you don’t want to eat because you just don’t fancy anything. While it’s fine not to eat for a day or two, it’s important that you are drinking plenty of fluids, as the last thing that you want on top of being unwell is getting dehydrated. Aim to drink at least two litres of water a day, ideally more, so that you can ensure that your body is well hydrated. You’d be amazed at how much more energy you have when you’re properly hydrated, so drinking plenty of fluids really is a must, if you want to feel better more quickly.

I also find things like green tea and vitamin drinks help, as they not only hydrate you, but pump you full of goodness as well. You could also try and make a few yummy and nutrient dense smoothies to help.
