One of the things I love most about being a mummy to lots of little people are those times when their little imaginations run away from them and they go off into character, all playing nicely together, because everyone has a part to play in the adventure.
Now these are the times I think I really should dash around the house like wonder woman and tick a few jobs off the list but in reality I have to ‘spy’ on them because the whole ‘let’s pretend’ stuff is just too cute to hoover over.
My second eldest (age 6) is always normally the instigator of such activities. He has the most incredible imagination and memory, so his attention to detail is astonishing. He can become anything he wants from the comfort of home, and most of all he likes us all to play a part. I frequently hear the shouts of “Mummy, you can be …. the shopkeeper, spy mum, vet, alien, lion tamer, fire eater, firefighter, three-headed monster etc” although, having got a little too into character one day when we were re-creating Roald Dahl’s The Witches, and I had been assigned the task of The Grand High Witch, I managed to frighten the children by apparently being “too good at her voice” … so if I ever need to get their attention The Grand High Witch comes out!
Toys are wonderful and we have lots at home that I frequently move from one place to another, tidy up and trip over and many of which provide hours of fun and development opportunities for the children – but when you watch what can happen when you leave a bunch of imaginative children with a big empty box and some colours , you realise just how powerful the imagination can be.
I love how very simple things can be turned into hours of fun…. take this photo below. The big kids put their scooter helmets on and started jumping off the wall in the back garden…when I asked them what they were doing, the response was “skydiving of course”!

I am the same way, I love spying on the kids when they play together like that. 'Let's pretend that…' is one of the most frequently heard phrases in our house!
