The silent disease

Did you know that Osteoporosis is known as the ‘silent disease’ because it has no symptoms and can remain undiagnosed until a bone is fractured?

Osteoporosis is a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile from loss of tissue, typically as a result of hormonal changes, or deficiency of calcium or vitamin D.

It’s a disease that is typically associated with older people but the key here is having the knowlege early to prevent the onset of the disease. Our bones begin to age in our thirties, so what if you could find out now what your risk of getting Osteoporisis was? You would have the knowledge early enough to make lifestyle changes and changes to your diet, and therefore reduce your risk for later life.

Now you can check your risk of developing osteoporosis with Osentia® Osteoporosis screening test, a new clinically-proven, safe and accurate at-home test that is available for the first time exclusively in the UK from Superdrug.com.

The test uses the latest screening technology to assess an individuals’ risk of suffering fragility fractures, a common sign of osteoporosis, by analysing a fingernail or toenail clipping and providing results in just seven days. With just a clipping of a nail this exciting new test is set to transform Osteoporosis testing.

The launch of Osentia® addresses the urgent need for earlier screening and intervention in the UK, as there is currently no national screening programme. New research reveals that this concerns three quarters (74 per cent) of women.

Osteoporosis is a common condition affecting over three million people in the UK. Women are particularly at risk, especially after the menopause  due to hormonal changes, however the research conducted by Osentia® found that almost half (46 per cent) of women don’t know what it is,  which could be why a worrying third of women with the condition remain undiagnosed.

The test couldn’t be easier to do, takes a few minutes and then within a few days you get the results in your inbox. The results are easy to read as a taffic light system showing your risk and also tell you the changes you could be making to reduce your risk.

Osentia® is a simple and non-invasive test that only requires a fingernail or toenail clipping and a health questionnaire to be sent to a laboratory for analysis using Raman Spectroscopy laser technology. Each individual will receive their personal risk of suffering from fragility fractures within seven days highlighting if they are at low, moderate or high risk, along with advice on how to reduce their risk, with an action to speak to their pharmacist or GP for those at moderate or high risk, respectively.

Osentia is £39.99 RRP and available exclusively online at Superdrug and the Osentia website.

  1. This is really interesting as it runs in my family. I do wonder how many GPs would accept the results from the test though. I know mine can be quite dismissive. I’d be interested to try it for peace of mind.

  2. I took the test as I am on HRT and know that I could be prone to osteoporosis. It was reassuring to see that I am not in the danger area. I will keep on exercising, pilates, running, weights etc in order to keep myself out of this, and intend to take this test every 2 years just to check and have peace of mind. It is a fantastic idea!

  3. I don’t have the time to go to the GP so this test would suit me perfectly. Osteoporosis runs in our family and I cannot afford to fall over and fracture something, and then find out I could have done something about it. My family needs me to be fit and strong for them…

  4. I took a test in a van outside Asda many years ago from a chance remark from my mother about family members having it. I took the result to the doctors and was straight away was taken seriously even though I was quite young. It was caught very early which was great so this sounds a very useful self test.
