Parents know that travelling with children can be a real challenge sometimes. My general approach is ‘be prepared for anything’. You never know when you’ll need an emergency pair of trousers, pack of baby wipes, favourite toy or Calpol. ANYTHING is possible when travelling with children.
Keeping things fun
I’ve said before that I always pack a ‘busy bag’ for each of the children when we go away. Nothing fancy, just a bag full of bits and bobs that will keep them occupied, along with some tasty snacks and an emergency change of clothes.
Now we are out of the baby and toddler years, I always pack travel games. With four children everyone always has someone to play with, and often they will all end up playing together, which is fab!
Are we nearly there yet?
We are fairly lucky in that all the children travel pretty well. They’ve all travelled quite a lot and quite big distances in the car, on trains and planes.
Despite this, we inevitably get that question “are we nearly there yet?” on occasions. Distracting them with a game can be really helpful.

we make words from the number plates of the cars around us – both children and adults I’ve driven with absolutely love this game, it can be difficult, but it’s def fun!

I-spy or spotting Eddie stobart lorries . Unfortunately my son gets car sick so we are limited what we can play
With our granddaughter, who’s just turned 4, we play a simple version of I-spy, using colours or shapes as she can’t spell yet. So “I spy something red” or I spy something that’s a triangle”.
It is always i spy or the number plate game.

We play “mini touch” on long trips, which is basically counting cars. But we always take a pack of cards everywhere we go to play different games whenever we have to wait somewhere.
We almost always play I Spy on journeys together.

It’s a classic, but making up words from number plates.
Depends how we are travelling, I spy or number plates if in the car or UNO and Scattergories or Tell Me on plane/train/boat. Sadly increasingly it seems to be tablets/I-Pads or phones
