Upcycle and revamp competition

A lot of the time, especially when you are a parent, money doesn’t seem to go very far. A £20 note for example doesn’t buy much more than a few essential items, milk, bread and a stash of nappies perhaps.

If you then need to do things around the home, you might not have many pennies left. That’s were you might want to consider ‘upcycling’. This is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless and/or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to creating great upcycled or revamped home, garden and clothing items. Clever storage specialist Bedroom Storage Maker, who offer wardrobe storage systems, are offering one lucky reader £25 to spend in Hobbycraft so you can purchase items to carry out such a project.

  1. I like to decoupage tired pieces of furniture, and bargain finds at flea markets to bring a splash of colour to my home. @boatinbird69

  2. I love the idea of taking on big projects like sanding down and repainting furniture, but i reality I do the much smaller scale embroidering cushions etc. One day I’ll tackle a massive project though!

  3. @Drjen84 I love making gifts for friends and family! Most recently I made Crayon letters for my nephews and framed them

  4. Chalk paint is great, you can cover loads of surfaces without any prep and as a bonus if the furniture is for children then they can chalk it to their hearts content without causing damage! 🙂

  5. Stencilling is a fun and interesting way to brighten up a plain painted wall, particularly when funds are low.

  6. I love up cycling old furniture. A lick of paint can do wanders, and transform something from a tired old fashioned item to a new piece that fits perfectly. My parents still had their dining table and chairs from when I was a baby, it had been sat in the garage for years… it now sits proudly in my dining room. I recovered the seats, painted the legs and sanded down the top. Priceless and something that has been kept in the family 🙂

  7. Charity shops are great for old vases and statement pieces that you can revamp to your own personal taste 🙂 @natalie_gibbing

  8. We have used a lot of items which ordinarily would get recycled; golden syrup tins to grow windowsill herbs and pretty bottles to put a fake flower on display!
I would love to buy some good quality acrylic sealant as we found the tins can rust around the edges which isn’t such a great look… My next experiment! 🙂

  9. I’ve upcycled some of my old outfits into clothing for my toddler. I’ve made sweater dresses, skirts, and a pair of trousers from sweater sleeves. While I’ve made some mistakes, it’s been fun to try and get more use from something I don’t need.

  10. I used the pots from microwaveable melt in the middle puddings – keeping them to use in the garden and as storage around the house. If you wanted to make it look more attractive, you could stick them into an old box or tin!
