World Book Day: celebrate reading for pleasure and win books

The World’s biggest celebration of reading for pleasure, World Book Day, returns this year on Thursday 1 March. In its 21st year, World Book Day Authors for 2018 include Clare Balding, Adam Hargreaves, Tom Fletcher, Andy Griffiths and Julian Clary. World Book Day delivers millions of £1 book tokens to children and young people across the UK in order for them to claim a free World Book Day book or a discount on other books.

  1. Ours will be yes, the school ask them to every year, can get very expensive as they are always asking for something that involves our hands in pockets

  2. My daughter always dresses up, not quite decided on costume for this year yet. Always fun to get out the face paints as well.

  3. My daughter’s school has never dressed up for world book day and at my son’s nursery they don’t dress up but they do take their favourite book in.

  4. unfortunately not. They would love to, but my daughter’s school doesn’t do a dressing up day. I have no idea why not.

  5. Yes, son want to go as Tom Gates! I have brought a white t-shirt and some fabric pens. For tom gates doodles.

  6. Yep, cant get out of it 🙁 My little boy wants to go as Harry Potter this year and my little girl wants to go as a “Cute Dog”

  7. Yes my daughter will be dressing up. Her school choose an author for the theme so this year is Julia Donaldson, and at the moment we are still wracking our brains for ideas!!!

  8. Yes the two younger children are, grandson is doing Harry Potter and granddaughter is telling me that it’s going to be a surprise so I’ll have to wait and see x

  10. yes, this is the first time my childrens school has allowed it. my daughter will be dressing at the cat in the hat and my twin boys as thing 1 and thing 2

  11. My grandsons are at nursery and they get to dress up everyday for the whole week, I’m not sure what they are dressing as

  12. My twin son and daughter are dressing up as Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland. We have snow forecast in Newcastle so they will be wearing their wellies too!

  13. Unfortunately not. The school has stopped dressing up for world book day. Used to love designing outfits

  14. She was going to be going as the cheshire cat, but now the schools have closed in Fife, Scotland today and the weather warning has been upped to red for the first time, I dont see the schools being open, maybe a dress up day in the house as shes been so excited.

  15. When he was younger my son loved dressing up but not so much these days but he’ll dress as “James Bond” this year

  16. No, he’s not. He really doesn’t like dressing up clothes and I wouldn’t want to force him.

  17. They were meant to be dressing in their PJ’s but it’s a snow day so dressing in their PJ’s at home instead!

  18. My niece loves her superhero costumes. I’m not sure who she would pick but I think school is closed.

  19. Yes I sent both girls in as their chosen characters. My youngest wanted to be fantastic mr fox and my middle daughter as the BFG. I even sprayed her hair grey and created a no scissors bob for her by tucking her hair under. She looks amazing although her ears did get some funny looks by passers by on the way to school lol.

  21. Yes my twin boys are! They have to go in costume that has a royal theme! One is going as a knight and one as a Royal Soldier!

  22. My granddaughter was dressing up in a Coco outfit but now the school is going to be closed because of the snow! I hope they will have World Book Day on another day instead.

  24. My 2 eldest went as Astrid from the How To Train Your Dragon books and Willy Wonka, I’m probably in the minority from what I’ve read online today but I love getting creative with their costumes!

  25. My children are dressing up as ‘Where’s Wally’ for world book day. It has been postponed at their schools because of the snow.

  26. My daughter was dressed as mary poppins – and yes, she was practically perfect in every way 😀

  27. They were Burt and Sheila from Rat burger but wbd was cancelled due to the weather!

  28. My son dressed up as Harry Potter but unfortunately Hogwarts had a snow day so hes been practicing his spells at home.

  29. The school decided to ask everybody to wear a book-themed hat instead of costumes, so I’ve spent most of the last week fashioning millinery from paper mache!

  30. No dressing up this year. My daughter’s school is doing dress a potato as your favourite book character! I don’t know what is worse!! We have done Gangsta Granny complete with swag bag and pan of cabbage soup. School closed for snow day today so will be taking it in next week.
