2. Collagen — Miracle or Marketing?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your skin, keeping it firm and plump, but here’s the truth: collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the skin. So, creams that claim to “replace collagen” directly can’t physically do so.

That doesn’t mean collagen-based skincare is useless — it can still hydrate and create a smoother surface, but it won’t rebuild collagen from the outside in.

If you want to boost collagen production, look instead for ingredients that stimulate it:

  • Peptides (as above)
  • Retinol (vitamin A)
  • Vitamin C
  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3)

And yes — taking a collagen supplement may help some women. Oral collagen peptides can be broken down during digestion and may trigger your body to produce more, though results vary.

Look for: Concentrations between 5–10%.
Why it matters: Niacinamide helps keep moisture in and pollutants out, while gently calming inflammation.

Use it on slightly damp skin and follow with a moisturiser to seal it in — otherwise it can draw water out of your skin if the air is very dry.

Look for: “Sodium hyaluronate” or “multi-weight hyaluronic acid.”
Why it works: It instantly boosts hydration and glow, even when you’re tired or dehydrated.


8. Biotin — Helpful, But More for Hair and Nails

Biotin (vitamin B7) supports keratin production, making it great for hair and nails, but it’s less essential for the skin itself. Most people already get enough biotin from their diet, so topical skincare containing it won’t make much visible difference to your face.

If you’re taking a biotin supplement for stronger hair or nails, it’s safe to continue — just don’t expect it to transform your skin.


9. SPF — The Most Important Step of All

No matter how many active ingredients you use, if you skip SPF, you’re undoing your progress. Daily sunscreen is the single most effective anti-ageing product available — it prevents UV-induced collagen breakdown and helps maintain all the hard work your serums are doing.
