Blue light glasses: are they worth it?

What are blue light glasses?

Blue light glasses are designed to filter out the blue light emitted by screens, but not all glasses filter out the same amount of blue light. Blue light glasses do not prevent eye strain from electronics, but studies suggest they may help promote better sleep.

The eye does not block blue light well. The cornea and lens block UV rays from reaching the back of the eye (the retina). Blue light passes through these structures and can reach the retina.

Blue light exposure may increase the risk of macular degeneration and is thought to contribute to digital eye strain.

Are they beneficial?

While blue light blocking glasses are effective at reducing the amount of blue light that enter the eyes, whilst looking like see through glasses, there is no current research to suggest that this can improve or protect the health of your eyes. Put simply, there is, it seems, no scientifically-proven benefit of wearing blue light blocking glasses for your eye health.

However, there is tons of anecdotal evidence from people who have been using blue light glasses to suggest that wearing them can significantly reduce headaches, migraines, and eye strain in particular.

Given this, if these things bother you then there is absolutely no harm in giving them a go. I’m the only one in our family who doesn’t have blue light glasses at the moment, I’m also the only one who wears contact lenses/glasses everyday.

Everyone here seems to find that the blue light glasses help to prevent their eyes from becoming too tired. They also seem to combat work-induced headaches from lots of screen time.

Which glasses?

We’ve used a range of different blue light glasses, all bought from Amazon. For the younger children, we find the Outray Blue Light Glasses to be the best. These are suitable for children 10 and under I would say. They do say suitable for teens but they are very small. They are very robust and don’t overwhelm a little face. They sit comfortably, which means greater wear. For the older children, I’ve found these blue light glasses to work well, and the adults ones I bought were these ones.

Do you use blue light glasses? Have you found them beneficial?
