The benefits of using a silk pillowcase

For a good few years now I’ve heard about the many benefits of using a silk pillowcase. A few years ago I got one for one of my children who suffers with eczema. At the time, his eczema on the back of his neck was bothering him. I’d read about how using a silk pillowcase can help with this, so we gave one a try and he got instant relief.

There are, of course many other benefits of using a silk pillowcase, many of them linked to hair and beauty. These are the areas I’ve seen most of the discussion recently, so I thought I would look into this further.

Stops hair going frizzy

Anyone out there wake up with some serious bed head? Look like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards some mornings? We all wake up looking like that some days because of all the tossing and turning we do at night, it’s always worse after a restless night!

So what can a silk pillowcase do to help? Due to the super-smooth texture of a silk pillowcase, there is no friction created on your strands, meaning the likelihood of waking up with frizzy, tangled hair is much lower. Sounds good doesn’t it? Have you tried this method to tame the mane?

Banish Split Ends

Staying on the topic of hair, do you suffer with split ends? How long after a trim does it take before they return? One way to prevent them could be to try a silk pillowcase. Split ends in your hair are caused by friction and damaged hair which cotton pillowcases can contribute towards. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase reduces the chance of getting split ends, as the material is very gentle on your hair.

Hypoallergenic

As I already mentioned, I have used a silk pillowcase for one of my children who suffers with eczema in the past. Silk pillowcases are great news for people suffering from allergies and skin conditions. A silk pillowcase is, by nature, hypoallergenic. Pure silk pillowcases are resistant to dust mites, molds and fungus and pollen.

Keeps Your Skin Hydrated

On the subject of skin benefits, a normal cotton or polyester pillowcase absorbs moisture easily, which can cause your skin to dry out throughout the night. We often try to combat this with heavy night creams, in order that we don’t dry out over night.

With a silk pillowcase, the nature of the silk fibres means your skin stays hydrated the entire night – without an intensive night cream. You will wake up feeling fresh and ready to crack on with the day. Another benefit, hydrated skin also helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. A lot of people with deep wrinkles are often very de-hydrated.

Studies have shown that the friction on your skin caused by regular pillowcases can cause wrinkles to form on delicate areas of your skin. The benefit of a silk pillowcase is its silky smooth texture which doesn’t cause friction or create tension on your skin.

Improves Your Complexion

Are you wanting to glow? You can glow with a silk pillowcase. The fabric enhances your complexion, leaving you with a healthy-looking glow, as it doesn’t do any damage to your skin and keeps your skin hydrated.

Temperature is Regulated

Are you someone who gets very hot and sweaty in bed? Perhaps you are peri-menopausal or menopausal? If you always feel hot and bothered in bed, why not try a silk pillowcase? Silk bedding regulates temperature, which makes it the ideal bedding throughout the entire year. Silk helps to get rid of moisture, making sure you stay dry and cool during the night.

Other Options

The other type of alternative pillowcase talked about quite a bit is the copper pillowcase. Copper pillow slips have copper oxide particles embedded in fabrics like polyester or nylon, and the science behind these cases is pretty sound. Research shows that using a copper pillowcase has antimicrobial and healing benefits for breakouts and may reduce and prevent fine lines and wrinkles.
