Heading out on a hiking adventure with your children can be an absolute blast! It’s a chance to bond, explore, and achieve something amazing together. If you’re looking for an exciting and challenging hiking trail that’s perfect for the whole family, look no further than the PYG Track in Snowdonia National Park, Wales. In this article, I will dive into the thrilling experience of climbing the PYG Track with kids and share some tips to make it an unforgettable journey for everyone involved.
Get Ready for the Journey:
Before you hit the trail, take a little time to get prepared. Familiarise yourself with the PYG Track and make sure it matches your family’s hiking skills. Talk to your children about the adventure that lies ahead and remind them of the importance of safety, sticking together, and taking care of the environment – there’s nothing worse that seeing litter on these stunning trails!
Make sure everyone is dressed for success! Dress your children in layers, so they can easily adjust their clothing as they warm up or cool down during the hike. Remember that the weather can change quickly in the mountains. Choose clothes made of moisture-wicking materials to keep them dry and comfy, and don’t forget to have them wear sturdy hiking boots or comfortable trail shoes with good grip, so they can tackle the trail with confidence.
Pack a backpack with all the essentials for your hike. Bring plenty of water, snacks to keep those tummies happy, sunscreen to protect against the sun, and hats and sunglasses for extra sun protection. Don’t forget a basic first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any necessary medications. It’s also a good idea to have a map, compass, or a fully charged phone or GPS device just in case you need a little extra guidance. There is a café at the top but this is not open all year around, so if you go out of season as we did, you will need to carry enough water for everyone for the way up and the return walk!
Take Breaks and Have Fun:
Remember, hiking with kids means taking breaks more frequently to rest and recharge. Plan regular stops along the trail, allowing your children (and yourselves) to catch their breath, have a drink, and appreciate the beautiful surroundings. Use these breaks as opportunities to explore nature together, like spotting birds, sheep and the cute goats, identifying plants, or simply enjoying the sounds of the wilderness.
Encourage and Support:
During the hike, your children (depending on their age and fitness) might face some challenges, both physical and mental. Offer words of encouragement, cheer them on, and celebrate their accomplishments along the way. Be patient and adjust your pace to match their energy levels, so they feel supported and motivated throughout the climb. There’s no rush remember!
Capture the Memories:
Don’t forget to capture those priceless moments along the way! Encourage your children to bring cameras or smartphones (if they’re old enough) to snap photos of the stunning landscapes. You can also take group pictures at significant spots on the trail to capture the memories and commemorate this special adventure together.
Celebrate Your Summit Success:
Reaching the summit of Snowdon is a moment to remember for everyone in the family. You may have to queue on busy days. Take the time to soak up the incredible views, savour the achievement, and celebrate together. Let your children reflect on the journey and the amazing feeling of conquering the PYG Track.
