Below is our guide on tips for improving your diet. Keep on reading for five different things to think about which will make a big difference to your health.

Stop trying to change everything overnight

One of the biggest mistakes people make is attempting a complete lifestyle overhaul all at once. When you crash diet, and cut everything out, this very quickly becomes an unrealistic diet as you can stick to it. You may be able to cut everything out for a week, but slowly your old habits will start to creep back in. Instead, focus on smaller, manageable changes that you can realistically maintain. That could mean swapping sugary drinks for water a few times a week, adding more vegetables to your meals, or cooking at home more often instead of ordering takeaway.

Make sure you eat plenty of fruit and vegetables

One of the best things you can do when trying to improve your diet is ensure you are eating the recommended five pieces of fruit and vegetables each day. Fruit and veg is vital to a healthy diet and if you ever go from not eating fruit and vegetables, to eating a lot of them, you can really feel the difference in a positive way. Adding berries to your breakfast, having a side salad with lunch, snacking on fruit during the day or including extra vegetables with your dinner can all help you reach your five-a-day more easily.

Add more protein to your meals

When trying to lose weight, adding more protein to your diet is one of the best things you can do. Protein is great at making you feel more full, meaning you eat less, helping you cut down on your calories. Protein is also great for helping repair muscles, so if you have been going to the gym or working out in some way as part of looking after your diet, then you’ll find yourself recovering better. Foods which are full of protein include chicken, eggs, greek yoghurt and more.

Plan ahead what you are going to eat

Healthy eating becomes much harder when you’re constantly making last-minute food decisions while tired or busy. Having even a rough meal plan for the week can help reduce the temptation to rely on convenience food every evening – when you are eating on impulse, we tend to opt for more unhealthy options. This doesn’t mean having to plan every meal in the week, instead, plan a couple and have them in ready to go at the start of the week.

Drink enough water during the day

How much water do you tend to drink each day? If you tracked yourself, do you think you manage to drink the recommended 2 to 3 litres each day? A lot of people struggle too, so if you find yourself struggling, you are not alone. To drink more, try to track your water intake on an app on your phone (just like you do when tracking you calories). You can also purchase a two litre water bottle and aim to drink it each day, this way you can easily keep track of how much you have drunk. If you are a parent, making sure your children drink a lot of water is very important.
