After 2020, many people had high hopes of travelling abroad in 2021. I know we did. After cancelling our summer holiday for 2020 due to COVID-19, we re-booked for the same weeks in 2021, only having now had to re-schedule again for 2022 – third time lucky hopefully!

How about you? Have you had to cancel or re-arrange holidays due to COVID? Given the extent of the red and amber lists and the continued limitation on travel, I recently asked my readers whether they were planning on going abroad at all this summer, or if they’d be looking for a break in the UK? Not a single person said they would be going abroad this year. Some were planning on a UK break, such as a hotel in the Lake District and others were just planning to stay at home and explore their local areas more.

With that in mind, here are a few ideas for UK breaks you might enjoy:

Cornwall

We love Cornwall. We spent some time their one Easter pre-COVID and the children still talk about it as one of their favourite trips away. The weather was actually awful, but it really didn’t matter, the beaches were stunning.

For us, it’s a really long way, so it’s not somewhere we would nip off to last minute, but for many of you it will be doable.

There are lots of lovely hotels near the Cornish Coast as well as lovely campsites with wonderful facilities. We stayed in a static caravan when we last went and it was so well-equipped and such a fun break.

If your kids love climbing on rocks or exploring beaches and rock pools this really is the place.

North Wales

I am a little biased here, having lived in North Wales for the last 18 years. I grew up in Leicestershire and moved away to university at 18, after 4 years at university, North Wales became home and has been ever since.

In the summer months and every Bank Holiday, people flock to North Wales for holidays. We’ve learnt not to move too far on a Bank Holiday weekend! When I drive to collect the children from school, people are parked up on the side of the road having a picnic and admiring the views. I feel very lucky to live in a part of the world people want to come to for a holiday and where something I see multiple times a day becomes somewhere people see as the perfect picnic spot.

North Wales has wonderful beaches, mountains and forests and so many wonderful things to do, especially for families. The Lake District

I love The Lakes, I think it’s a really special part of the UK, and like North Wales, somewhere people seem to flock to at Bank Holidays, everyone wants a bit of the ‘peace’ it offers it seems.

The scenery is stunning, the walks are amazing and it’s always possible to find a gorgeous little pub to re-fuel. Then of course there are the water activities, which, in the summer are especially fun.

There are plenty of lovely places to say, small Bed and Breakfasts, large group accommodation or nice hotels.

The Cotswolds

I haven’t been to the Cotswolds for years but it really does scream idyllic England to me and it’s a much bigger area than people think. Famous for quintessentially English market towns and villages, the Cotswolds are a range of gently rolling hills, including the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England and Wales making them a perfect base for you if you are a keen walker or cyclist.
