Car shopping as a woman

Shopping for a new car can be very stressful indeed. This can be made even worse if you are a woman. I admit to not really understanding much about how cars work or what bits are what but that doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion about what will work best for our family. When I am piling everyone in everyday it needs to be practical and work well for us.

We needed a car that could fit all six of us in, something that was economical over long distances, something that was as spacious as possible and something where we could still fit the pushchair in the boot. It can be hard to be taken seriously as a women when you are choosing a car, arranging insurance or getting a car repaired or serviced.

I’ve just come across an interesting UK-wide motoring club for females called FOXY Lady Drivers Club with practical car reviews for women, cheap car insurance, money-saving offers and VIP garage services. It is well worth checking out. I remember years ago phoning around for insurance and never knowing the correct bits of information. These days, most of this can be done on price comparison sites or similar which makes things easier and gives me chance to collect the correct bits of information.

We tried a few leasing companies to get a good price and most of this can also be done online or via email which also makes things easier. I felt happy to negotiate and whilst there was lots of backwards and forwards, this seems to be the norm.

If you have been following the blog you will know that we have been on the look out for a large family car. Some of the cars we have looked at include the Mitsubishi Outlander, The Ford Grand Tourneo Connect and the Volkswagen Sharan .

The car we decided on is the Seat Alhambra. Some friends of ours bought one of these a while back, so we were interested to see what this car could offer a large family with lots of ‘stuff’ to transport. Essentially, it is the same car as the Sharan, in all but name and a few subtle differences.

The electronic sliding doors are superb! Imagine the scenario, you get into the supermarket car park and there are no parent and child spaces available because they are all full of sports cars without child seats. You curse the selfish people under your breath and drive on. You park in a tight space, the only one available and it’s a windy day. How are you going to get the children out without them bashing the car next to you and how are you going to get the door open wide enough to get the baby seat out of the door? – well you are good to go in this car as the sliding doors mean none of those problems exist!

Instantly I’m in love with this car! It is so practical and family-friendly. The only downside for us really is the lack of 4 wheel drive, which would be useful to have where we live.

If you have a big family and that includes babies and small children in Isofix seats then this is the car for you. All 5, yes, I did say all 5 back seats are Isofix compatible meaning that you have so many possibilities for configurations, depending on who is in the car and what you are doing.

The middle row of seats have these handy ‘in-flight’ tray tables, great for older children on long journeys.

The cup holders are large and deep, as are all the door pockets, so nothing flies out when you get out of the car or go around a tight corner.

All the seats fold down, slide forward and maneuver really easily, so there is easy access to the two rear seats.

Without any Isofix legs in the way there is loads of legroom in the rear of the car, plenty for an adult to sit comfortably in there.

There are lots of charging sockets in the car, so all family members can stay fully charged on the go. Great for charging electronic devices for the children or being able to catch up on some work.

There is a really handy storage pocket in the centre of the dashboard, perfect for phones, sunglasses etc.

The middle seat is a full size seat so you don’t just need to put the skinny one with the small bottom in that seat, anyone can fit.

If you are like us and don’t travel light then let me introduce you to the handy and deceptively spacious under floor storage.

You can see that even with the Isofix leg out there is plenty of room for bags in the footwell. For example, a Trunki will fit in here easily.

Most types of car seats seem to fit snuggly on the seats, so you shouldn’t have a problem with whatever you have for the children.

With the two back seats down, the boot is huge and you could even take the kitchen sink if you wanted to. With those seats in use the boot takes a pushchair and not much more. Having said that, ours is quite a bulky one and I am not sure I have packed it in very well here.

I’ve prepared a list of pros and cons of the Alhambra to help you decide if this could be the car for you. You will notice that there are way more pros than cons to this car for a large family and I have to say, of the cars we have tried, this has ticked the boxes for us the most – for moving a large family around economically, I really don’t think anything else compares.

Pros:

  • Heated seats right up back
  • 5 rear isofix points – can have two baby seats next to each other
  • Tray tables
  • Large, deep cup holders
  • Sliding doors (ours are electronic)
  • Lots of leg room, even in the rear of the car
  • High roof so feels very spacious inside
  • Seats slide forward and backwards to allow for more legroom
  • Optical parking system detects all around the car …. Amazing but takes some getting used to as you wonder why you are beeping!
  • Fully functional 7 seater
  • Lots of storage pockets
  • Excellent visibility
  • Radio sound fades out when maneuvering – prevents additional distraction (loved this!)
  • Very economical over both short and long distances

Cons:

  • Very small boot when all 7 seats operational
  • Not 4 wheel drive

Overall this car gets an 8.5 out of 10 for how practical it is for us. So far, so good.
