We all know how important it is to protect our children’s teeth. Putting this into practice isn’t always easy. Each of the children has gone through a period when brushing their teeth has become a bit of a battle but fortunately this hasn’t lasted too long.
We know that regular trips to the dentist are important. I have always found it easier to take all the children at the same time, even if they aren’t having an appointment so they get used to it. Just last week, at the end of the appointment for the three eldest, I popped my 16 month old in the dentist’s chair and he had a little go and a good look around at the equipment. I find that this means when it comes to them actually going to their own first appointment there is much less fuss.
As well as a good brushing routine at home, the older children get to brush their teeth at school as well, around mid-morning, and that has been part of their school routine since they started so that is an extra bonus.
There has been some research released by ProNamel recently which shows some shocking statistics.
In order to protect your children’s teeth from acid erosion you should:

- Avoid brushing right after eating or drinking acidic foods
- Get them to nibble on a bit of cheese or swill with milk or water after each meal
- Get them to use a glass and straw and finish a drink quickly
- Ensure they brush their teeth twice a day, everyday with a fluoride toothpaste for children
